Magic and legends
Siurana is considered one of the most charming towns in all of Priorat. It is located just 25 km from Mas d'en Bruno. This mountaintop village is known for its historic castle, towering cliffs and spectacular vistas.
Wind your way through the narrow cobblestone streets and visit the Church of Santa María de Siurana, a small Romanesque-style temple, as well as the remains of an old Arab castle - the last vestige of Arab influence in the area from the 9th century.
Siurana Reservoir is a perfect place for practicing water sports with wonderful routes such as the well-known Toll del Forn, ideal for kayaking, and the nearby Salto de la Reina Mora, an imposing cliff full of magic and history.
Origin of Priorat
The origins of Priorat can be traced to Cartuja de Escaladei, the first monastery in the Iberian Peninsula.
Escaladei was founded in the 12th century by monks who chose this place for the uniqueness of its landscape, framed by the Sierra de Montsant.
The Prior was the principle leader in charge of running the monastery, as well as serving as mayor and judge of the surrounding villages. It is from the Prior of Escaladei that this region of Priorat got its name.
Today, you can visit important parts of the monastery, such as the 3 cloisters, the refectory and the church, as well as a cell that has been rebuilt as it was in its origin.
Natural park
The Sierra de Montsant Natural Park, located in the north of the Priorat region, is ideal for hikers, cyclists and climbers. The landscape and natural treasures, together with the spectacular nature of El Montsant, have made this reserve a symbol for Priorat and for the region of Tarragona.
The name derives from the list of hermitages and religious symbols that are located within this enclave, such as the Hermitage of Sant Bartomeu (12th century), and the Cartuja de Escaladei.
Located around the Montsant river, the Sierra de Montsant is full of paths, caves and natural hiking paths. Its highest peak is La Roca Corbatera, which peaks at 1,163 meters.
